The #1 Movie is a Star-Studded Sci-Fi Thriller Critics Hate with a Record-Breaking Budget

It’s hard to fathom a budget of $320 million. Especially when a lot of filmmakers would kill for just 1% of that. However, that’s what the #1 movie on Netflix today cost to produce. I’m talking about The Electric State, the new movie from Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.
That $320 million dollar price tag makes the flick the 13th most expensive film ever made. Wow. With an expenditure like that, the financiers were likely hoping for an enthusiastic reaction from film critics. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case. In fact, The Electric State debuted with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Russo brothers film to date.
As of the publication of this post, the flick sits at an abysmal 15% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads: “Lumbering along like a giant automaton, The Electric State has plenty of hardware to back it up but none of the spark that’d make it come to life.”
If you think that’s bad, wait for this. IndieWire was particularly pointed in their critique. The headline reads: “The Russo Brothers’ Joyless Netflix Mockbuster Is Only Compelling as an Argument for Letting the Movies Die.” Oh dear.

If the film is as bad as it appears, it may give Waterworld a run for its money as one of the most expensive missteps of all time. The flick has been trending on Netflix since it premiered four days ago, so people are definitely watching it. I’m curious to see how the film performs as word of mouth gets around and the abysmal reviews continue to circulate.
Interestingly enough, Andy Muschietti was initially tapped to helm the feature with the Russo brothers on board to produce instead of direct. Muschietti stuck around after the switch-up as an executive producer.
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay for The Electric State. Their screen treatment is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag.
The picture features a star-studded cast that includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Jenny Slate, Brian Cox, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci.
If you’re curious to see what critics are so up in arms about, head over to Netflix and give the film a shot.
The setup for this star-studded effort on Netflix goes as follows:
An orphaned teen hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother, teaming up with a smuggler and his wisecracking sidekick.
That is everything that we have for you at present. Stay tuned to Dread Central in the very near future for more exciting updates on which films are making waves on your favorite streaming platforms.
