Guillermo del Toro Praises Free-to-Stream Thriller as a “Chronicle of greed turning the meek into beasts”

Guillermo del Toro and Sam Raimi are two of my favorite filmmakers working today. So, it’s quite the plum assignment to get to spread the news about del Toro championing an underrated Sam Raimi picture. And that’s just what I’m about to do now, dear reader.
That’s right, Guillermo del Toro once took to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter and championed the ample merits of a sorely underrated Sam Raimi thriller.
The Crimson Peak director’s post reads: “Film: A Simple Plan by Sam Raimi. The spirit of the Coens hovers above the waters of this chronicle of greed turning the meek into beasts.”

I previously covered A Simple Plan for my Dread Central column The Overlooked Motel. Here’s a brief excerpt from my write-up: “A Simple Plan features a pretty simplistic message about the evils of greed and the destructive power it holds over us. But, that premise is used to tremendous effect here.”
Where can I watch A Simple Plan?
A Simple Plan was previously only available on physical media and as a digital rental. However, the flick very recently landed on Pluto, where you can now stream the picture for free (with ads).
Raimi directed the flick from a script by Scott B. Smith. Smith adapted his 1993 novel of the same name for the screen. If Smith’s name rings a bell, that’s likely because he also wrote the novel The Ruins and took point penning the screen treatment for that adaptation.
The picture’s core cast includes the late, great Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Brent Briscoe, and Gary Cole.
The setup for this Guillermo del Toro-approved crime thriller goes like this:
While in the woods near their small town, upstanding local Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton), his dim brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), and their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) discover a crashed plane with two things in it — a dead pilot, and a stash of more than four million dollars. Although Hank is reluctant to keep the money, Jacob and Lou convince him otherwise, and they devise a plan to split the fortune. Things quickly go wrong, however, dramatically affecting the trio and those around them.
