Horrified TikTok Star Thinks Shocking Found Footage Horror Movie On Streaming Is a Real Documentary; Goes Viral

I love Dutch Marich’s Horror in the High Desert. His low-budget take on mockumentary horror ends with one of the scariest reels I’ve seen in a horror movie… ever. I’m not one to overreact, but when I saw what I saw, I had to pause the film just to catch my breath. Naturally, I was desperate for more, and Marich is slowly carving out a name for himself with not just one, but two additional High Desert films, with more promised in the future. It’s a desert I haven’t yet been disappointed to be lost in. But a star on TikTok seems a bit lost.

In our review of the sequel, Horror In The High Desert 2: Minerva, we wrote, “Horror In The High Desert 2: Minerva is a terrifying found footage experience that’ll have you crawling out of your skin.” And with last year’s third entry, Horror In The High Desert 3: Firewatch, we wrote, “This is the kind of film found footage fans dream of, and they just keep getting better with each entry.” Bring on Horror in the High Desert 4: Majesty. What’s so great is that despite being movies and all, they feel more distinctly real and visceral than most horror mockumentaries. So real, in fact, one TikTok user actually thought what they were seeing had really happened. First, stream the first on Tubi, and then come back to hear how Marich’s found-footage classic went viral in The Blair Witch Project tradition.

Per Tubi: Three years after an outdoorsman disappeared, his friends discuss the events leading up to his vanishing and the horrifying result of his fate.

TikTok user Christie Bosch, whose handle is thatdocumentarygirl, starts her video with, “This documentary had me so freaked out, I started tearing up.” Color me intrigued. I love a freaky documentary, so pray tell what the film is. Well, it’s Horror in the High Desert which, wait a minute… this movie’s fictional, right? Bosch expands, equating the film to “the real-life version of The Blair Witch,” which is a pretty apt comparison. They’re both remarkably effective and distinctly realistic.

Bosch goes on to describe the story of the first film (wait until the plot thickens with the subsequent entries), still under the impression the story is true. Some users commented that the story bears remarkable similarities to the real-life disappearance of hiker Kenny Veach, while others pointed out that what Bosch was watching was a movie, not a documentary. Still, other users shared similar experiences thinking the film was true up until the end. You can check out the TikTok in full below:

Watch this on tubi #fyp #fypage #whattowatch #mustwatch #truecrime #docutok #documentary #documentaries #truecrimecommunity #scary #horror This film really freaked me out. I was doing my daily search for a documentary like I usually do and came across a stranger than fiction documentary list online. This was on this list and because it was on a documentary list I just got straight to watching it without looking anything up on it. It really did make me tear up I was so scared. After watching it I was doing my usual research and discovered this is in-fact a mockumentary. I’m so glad I didn’t know this before watching because it really made me have a spooky and entertaining experience. The last time I felt this way watching a mockumentary was when I watched “lake mungo”. The film makers did a really good job of making it seem like a modern day true crime documentary which in turn made it seem very believable even though the events shouldn’t be believable. Great low budget film that was made during Covid and I hope by making this video the way I did people will have the same experience I did. 🍿#greenscreenvideo
