Stephen King Calls This Gritty Streaming Thriller “perfectly honed”

Stephen King could likely rest on his laurels at this point. However, King keeps cranking out more literature on the regular and even moonlights as an Entertainment Weekly columnist on occasion. The author has used his side hustle with EW to share some of his controversial hot takes and to spotlight films with which he really connected.
On New Year’s Day in 2010, King shared his top flicks of the prior year via his recurring engagement with EW. The Misery author has some great picks on that list. My cool sister and I are particularly partial to The Fantastic Mr. Fox, his #9 choice. However, that’s not what I’m here to talk about today.
Today, I am spotlighting King’s #1 pick from 2009. It’s a gritty war thriller that cleaned up at the Academy Awards. If you haven’t guessed, I’m speaking about The Hurt Locker.
King’s enthusiastic take on the film reads, in part: “Director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break), who has explored the destructive impulses of young men before, outdoes herself in this perfectly honed drama that speaks to the addictive? attractions of risk and violence. Want to know why it’s so easy for the pols to feed the war machine? Look here for answers.”
The setup for this Stephen King-endorsed thriller goes like this:
Following the death of their well-respected Staff Sergeant in Iraq, Sergeant JT Stanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge find their Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit saddled with a very different team leader. Staff Sergeant William James is an inveterate risk-taker who seems to thrive on war, but there’s no denying his gift for defusing bombs.
I wasn’t kidding when I said that The Hurt Locker cleaned up at the Academy Awards. The feature took home six statuettes at the 2010 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.
Where is The Hurt Locker available to stream?
If you’re ready to experience this harrowing portrayal of war and its impact on the human psyche, you can find The Hurt Locker streaming on Peacock as of the publication of this post.
That’s all I’ve got for you at present. Stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more life-enhancing cinematic recommendations from your favorite creators. If you’re keen to keep up with my comings and goings on social media, you can find me on Threads @FunWithHorror.
