Hideo Kojima Praises “Impressive” New Netflix Hit That’s Terrifying Audiences

Netflix has had a bit of a rough start to the year. While streamers expectedly dip and rise as new movies and shows are released, Netflix’s big tentpole for the year, Joe and Anthony Russo’s The Electric State, was a critical flop. The $320 million epic, adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s illustrated novel of the same name, has charted globally, but has yet to reach Number 1 in the United States. Not a great sign for the behemoth blockbuster’s longevity.
Still, as expected, the smaller, quieter titles prove to be the streamer’s boon. Zero Day no doubt drew in viewers, especially courtesy of a Stephen King endorsement, and Apple Cider Vinegar is a hidden gem series hailing from Australia I’d encourage you to check out ASAP. The show on everyone’s mind, however, seems to come out of nowhere. The show is so ingrained in the zeitgeist, even seminal creator Hideo Kojima is tweeting about it.
Check out more about Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s Netflix miniseries Adolescence below:
Per Netflix: When a 13-year-old is accused of the murder of a classmate, his family, therapist, and the detective in charge are all left asking: What really happened?
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the series is sitting at 99%, with a consensus that reads, “Stylistically bold and beautifully acted from top to bottom, Adolescence is a masterclass in televisual storytelling and a searing viewing experience that scars.” The show has been nothing short of a phenomenon, captivating viewers and, ideally, imparting real-world, lasting change. Oh, and with 66.3 million views, Adolescence broke a new Netflix record, scoring the largest ever two-week viewership numbers for a limited series.

It’s no wonder acclaimed video game designer Hideo Kojima is obsessed. The creator took to Twitter to share his thoughts, remarking, “The characters, drama, and mystery are all brilliantly portrayed. I have to keep watching this.”
You can check out Kojima’s response in full below:
I watched the first episode of Adolescence on Netflix. It’s good. it’s impressive. It’s filmed in a single continuous shot from start to finish. The camera follows the police raid, the arrest of the teenage suspect, the trip to the station, medical checks, the lawyer meeting, and… pic.twitter.com/Dw8wCAXp4o
