The #1 Most-Watched Thriller on Prime Video Features a Former Teen Star in a Mature New Role

Tyler Perry has long been a divisive filmmaker. Some people eat up his escapist thrillers featuring twisty narratives and passionate affairs. Others are not as keen on the director’s work, calling him out for problematic depictions of Black characters. Despite the persistent criticisms of the filmmaker’s output, he continues to release new content with a certain regularity. Perry debuted his latest effort on Prime Video earlier this month, and it’s already climbing the charts.
Perry’s newest picture is called Tyler Perry’s Duplicity. I want to say that the film marks a step forward for the director, but the early reviews tell a different story. RogerEbert.Com posted a one-star review of the director’s new film lamenting that he seems to return to old habits with his latest offering after showing some positive progress with his 2024 Netflix release The Six Triple Eight. The critique also laments that Duplicity doesn’t handle serious issues like police violence and racial profiling with the nuance they deserve.
In spite of the bad press from early reviews, Duplicity is racking up streams on Prime Video in its first week of release. In fact, Duplicity is the second most-watched film on the platform today and the second-ranked picture overall. The flick comes in second to Twisters, which claims the top slot today.
Here is the setup for Tyler Perry’s new thriller on Prime Video:
A high-powered attorney faces her most personal case yet when she’s tasked with uncovering the truth behind the shooting death of her best friend’s husband.

The legal thriller stars Kat Graham, Meagan Tandy, Tyler Lepley, RonReaco Lee, and Joshua Adeyeye. You may remember Kat Graham from her time on the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries. The actress appeared in all 171 episodes of the program. She has worked steadily since the show ended and seems to be taking on a more mature fare lately.
Tyler Perry takes the sole screenwriting credit on this project and is the director of this latest effort.
