The #1 Series on Netflix Is a Tragic True Crime Shocker Playing Out in Real Time

Netflix continues to produce true crime content as fast as viewers can digest it. It seems like a month doesn’t go by without a new docuseries chronicling a devastating turn of events. Speaking of, a true crime program called Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer debuted on the platform on March 31, 2025, and it’s already the most-watched show on the streamer.
Some of the buzz around this new series comes from the fact that the case is still playing out in real time. The show profiles the suspected victims of New York architect and alleged serial killer Rex Heuermann. Police arrested Heuermann in 2023 on multiple murder charges. The defendant pled not guilty. The case has yet to go to trial. However, pre-trial hearings are currently underway.
Liz Garbus directed the series, with Robert Kolker taking the sole writing credit. The program is based on his book, Lost Girls. Garbus additionally sat at the helm of a 2020 narrative feature based on Kolker’s book, also titled Lost Girls.
The setup for this tragic Netflix docuseries is this:
A look back at the women who disappeared from New York City and Long Island before the 2010 discovery of female remains found in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, which led authorities to believe the deaths were all connected.
In the time since Garbus submitted her footage to Netflix, authorities have charged Heuermann with an additional murder. Some speculate that there may still be additional victims who have yet to be formally linked to the case.
Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer is split into three episodes. All of them are available to stream now. If Garbus continues to follow and document the case, there may be more episodes forthcoming at a later date. Regardless of whether or not Garbus continues to profile the proceedings for Netflix, there will surely be plenty of media coverage as the trial date draws near.
