‘M3GAN 2.0’ Trailer: Oops, She Did It Again!

People love killer dolls. Chucky, Brahms, Fats, Annabelle, Dolly Dearest, the list goes on. It’s fascinating and surreal to see an inanimate object do the devil’s bidding. So, it’s no surprise that M3GAN, the titular antagonist behind the 2023 film of the same name, became an instantaneous hit with the moviegoing public. Unorthodox lullabies and choreographed dance routines brought a level of camp to the flick that most simply couldn’t resist. The AI-powered companion quickly became a meme that still lives in infamy.
With such an enthusiastic reaction to M3GAN’s campy antics, it’s no great surprise that Blumhouse ordered a second series installment shortly after the first hit theaters. Well, the wait is almost over, dear reader, as M3GAN 2.0 is slated for release this June. But you don’t have to wait till then for a taste of what’s in store; the first full trailer is already here!
But first, here’s the synopsis for the highly anticipated sequel:
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
Now, watch the official trailer:
It’s hard to judge a film by a three-minute preview, but I have to say I’m already quite taken. I like what I see. I was somewhat amused by the original. However, my review lamented the lack of accessible characters and the absence of viscera. With that said, it looks like the upcoming sequel hits the ground running, immediately delivering the camp, quirks, and charm that eventually won me over last time.
Gerard Johnstone, who directed the first series installment, returns to helm the sequel. Screenwriter Akela Cooper is also back for this second outing. Not to mention, James Wan returns to produce. It’s great to see the team that made the original a success reuniting.
I should mention that it’s not just the creative team returning. The sequel also features several original cast members, including Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Jen Van Epps.
Among the new additions to the cast are Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement.
M3GAN 2.0 comes to theaters on June 27, 2025.
