This “blood-soaked Western with first-rate characters” Is Streaming Now on Paramount+

I am a sucker for a good horror Western. I only wish there were more to choose from. The past few years have produced a couple of noteworthy offerings in that niche sub-genre. Place of Bones is a decent effort that gets more wrong than right. However, the real standout from the last five years is Organ Trail, a 2023 release that hits all the right notes. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you can catch this visceral effort streaming on Paramount+ as of the publication of this post!
Why you need to see Organ Trail.
If you need a little more convincing, I’m prepared to put my money where my mouth is and break down what works about the flick. The headline for my Organ Trail review reads: “A Blood-Soaked Western with First-Rate Characters.” I think that sums it up well. The juxtaposition of nuanced characters and persistent viscera really sets this film apart. The flick serves up characters that we have good reason to care about, making some of the deaths within quite painful to endure. I went in expecting escapist entertainment but came away realizing that Organ Trail is more than just a gruesome special effects showcase. Screenwriter Meg Turner scripts textured characters that had me experiencing a surprisingly dynamic range of emotions.
This effectively scripted effort was born from a happy accident, proving that the best ideas often come from the most unexpected places. I touched on that in my critique, saying: “[Screenwriter Meg] Turner revealed that they came up with the title for the film before the screenplay had been written. It all came about when they Googled the Oregon Trail video game but misspelled the title. Thinking Organ Trail sounded like a good name for a horror screenplay, that happy accident saw Turner eventually coming up with an idea that they loosely described as Little House on the Prairie if it were written by Quentin Tarantino.”
What is this wacky horror Western on Paramount+ about?
Abigale and her family fall victim to a gang of ruthless cowboys while making their way across the Oregon Trail. As the only survivor, she does whatever it takes to retrieve her family’s horse from the clutches of the bloodthirsty bandits.
Zoé de Grand’Maison, Mather Zickel, Lisa LoCicero, Lukas Jann, Olivia Grace Applegate, and Sam Trammell topline this outlandish effort.
If I’ve successfully piqued your curiosity, make your way over to Paramount+ where you can find Organ Trail streaming as of the publication of this post!
