‘Weapons’: Viral Website Teases Zach Cregger’s Chilling New Film

Found footage freaks, get hype, because we’re getting it in spades with the new viral marketing campaign for Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Yesterday, New Line Cinema released a series of creepy Ring camera-style images and videos through their social media accounts. Plus, they launched the website MaybrookMissing.net to cultivate a strange mystery around Cregger’s latest feature. And from what we’ve seen so far, Weapons looks downright chilling.
The website is something out of the early 2000s, perfect for cultivating that air of truth around Weapons. Without that sleek, polished feel typical of a movie website, this looks like something made by a small-town journalist trying to establish their local paper’s digital footprint. It’s very The Blair Witch Project, which set the standard for viral marketing campaigns before its release in 1999.
On its home page, the website states:
A chilling mystery has gripped the small town of Maybrook after 17 children voluntarily left their homes Wednesday morning. Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core.
Upon investigation, front door camera footage showed the children leaving their homes at 2:17 am Wednesday morning without any signs of force. Since then, little information has surfaced, and the case continues to baffle investigators.
In response, a school gathering was held, where growing unease among parents became clear. As the town struggles to understand what happened, officials continue to urge the public for any leads, while Maybrook is left waiting for answers.
It looks like we have our plot synopsis for Weapons. At 2:17 AM, as captured in the published images and videos, 17 children disappeared. But where did they go? We’ll have to watch the film to find out.
Plus, the website teases a surprising connection to Cregger’s first feature, Barbarian, with a news article reporting what happened to Georgina Campbell’s Tess in the basement of that Detroit Airbnb. Perhaps that connection will be more than a coincidence in the final film…
What Else Do We Know About Weapons?
According to Collider, Weapons has been described as an “inter-related multi-story horror epic” following the families affected by the mass disappearance. The script has also reportedly been compared to Paul W.S. Anderson’s Magnolia.
Reports out of Cinemacon, where attendees were shown first-look footage, share that the film is nothing short of “insane”, with Deadline reporting images of “blood exploding from a head [and] some red-haired clown kid popping up in the forest.” No reports yet about if the film contains any in-world camera moments, but fingers crossed that it’s at least a hybrid of narrative and found footage techniques!
Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Julia Garner (The Wolfman), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives) star in the film.
Weapons comes to theaters on August 8, 2025, from New Line Cinema.
