Horror and sci-fi fans have lost another one of their most inspirational and iconic artists. We are deeply saddened by the news coming to us from Swiss public television channel SRF of the passing of acclaimed artist H.R. Giger Monday afternoon.
In an article posted to their website, SRF states that they learned of Giger’s passing from his family. Details are still few at the time of posting, but it appears Giger passed in a hospital where he was being treated for injuries sustained during a fall down some stairs.
H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland in 1940. He went on to study architecture and industrial design in Zurich at the School of Commercial Art. After graduating he briefly worked as a designer and interior architect before dedicating his life to creating what would later become some of the most iconic imagery of several generations.
Easily recognizable by its trademark “biomechanical” style, H.R. Giger’s artwork evokes a strong sexual tone and is largely inspired by night terrors that he suffered all his life. To imply he was only known for his work on the film Alien would be to disregard his vast body of artwork, though it was certainly the terrifying design of the Xenomorph that would catapult him into the mainstream and inspire leagues of designers and artists for decades to come.
In 1998 Giger purchased Château St. Germain in Gruyères, Switzerland, turning it into the H. R. Giger Museum, which is run by his wife, Carmen Maria Scheifele Giger, who serves as Director of the museum.
We here at Dread Central express our deepest condolences to Giger’s many friends, family members, and fans worldwide. His work has made a lasting impression on countless people and will not be soon forgotten.
