It used to be that summer TV shows were poor replacements for those that aired during the regular season, but thankfully those days are over. One of the best of this year’s warm weather crop is “Salem.” Already on board with us? Then check out a new clip from Episode 1.08, “Departures.”
WGN America’s “Salem” explores what really fueled the town’s infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth behind them.

The series stars Janet Montgomery as the ruthless but vulnerable Mary Sibley, Salem’s most powerful enchantress; Shane West as handsome, hardened war veteran John Alden – and Mary’s onetime love interest; Seth Gabel as local aristocrat Cotton Mather, who fans the flames of Salem’s witch hunt; Ashley Madekwe as Mary’s mysterious, carnal accomplice, Tituba; Xander Berkeley as chief politician Magistrate Hale; Tamzin Merchant as the forthright Anne Hale, an artist with a perilous attraction to Alden; Elise Eberle as the mysteriously afflicted Mercy Lewis; and Iddo Goldberg as outcast Isaac Walton.
“Salem” Episode 1.08 – “Departures” (airs 6/8/14)
Increase Mather (guest star Stephen Lang) makes it his first order of business to catch a real witch, and starts by pinpointing a prominent figure from Salem’s most sinful district. Mary worries that Increase will detect that his old friend George is under a spell and enlists the help of Isaac to deter Increase from uncovering the truth.
Meanwhile, accusations within Salem intensify, and Cotton must deal with a painful turn of events – and Anne’s suspicions of her father reach a fever pitch.
In addition to Lang, guest starring are Christopher Berry (“Resurrection”) as Petrus and Morgana Shaw as Mab. “Departures” was written by Jon Feldman and directed by Alexander Zakrzewski.
