#SDCC14: Supernatural Panel Highlights Include Demon Dean Details and Lots More!

While a freak thunderstorm blew through San Diego (Chuck? God? Was that you?), “Supernatural” fans were treated to another rousing SDCC panel thanks to stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Mark Sheppard and showrunner Jeremy Carver.
First Jensen took the stage with a clip from Episode 10.03, which he directed, showing the first time the Winchesters are reunited after Dean is turned into a demon. Look for that to hit online soon; we’ll update the story once it does.
Ackles explained how we can know Dean really is a monster: Demon Dean (DD) doesn’t care about the Impala as much as real Dean. He continued, “[It] is actually Dean’s soul that is twisted. It was interesting trying to make it a different character but, at the same time, be the same character — but twisted and demonic.”
Meanwhile, “Sam digs into how to rescue his brother,” Carver said. The theme of the season is “the idea of these brothers questioning who the real monster is… it’s great and it’s exciting and emotional and fun.”
Padalecki is happy to see his compadre tackle DD: “I’ve played all freakin’ sorts of Sams so it’s a real joy to get to see Ackles flex those same type of muscles.”
Collins brought the crowd up-to-speed on what’s up with Castiel when we return in the fall: “Early on in the season the most important thing for Castiel is trying to help get Dean patched up. He’s more concerned about that than recovering his own powers.”
And Crowley? Newly anointed series regular Sheppard said of whether or not Crowley has control over DD, that’s something he would like to explore over the “three or four seasons to come.”
Carver described the upcoming 200th episode of “Supernatural” as “musical-ish. Beyond the songs, it’s very much what we consider to be a love letter to the fans.” We can also expect the season premiere to have a heavy dose of music with singing and “rump-shaking.” Ackles teased, “Apparently Demon Dean likes to karaoke, or does he?”
Padalecki thanked the fans, some of the most loyal you’ll find anywhere, for their support over the past 10 seasons. “We would not exist if it weren’t for you so thank y’all very much,” he said. He also got everyone’s hopes up when a fan asked about the possible return of Kevin. “You’re more likely to come back on ‘Supernatural’ if you die than if you survive,” he exclaimed.
Shortly after that, Kevin Tran himself (Osric Chau) stepped up to the mic, whipping off a disguise and posing the question: “So, when does Kevin come back?” Carver was noncommittal, but Jensen vowed, “We’ll never forget!”
With Castiel’s trenchcoat wardrobe being inspired by DC’s John Constantine, what does Misha think about the character now getting his own series on NBC? Collins threw down the gauntlet: “Granted, we did plagiarize the look from the [comic book] Constantine, but I figure we’ve got squatter’s rights now – it’s our wardrobe!”
A sore subject with “Supernatural” fans is always the depiction of women on the show. Any new female regulars on the horizon? “You can expect a very healthy dose of very strong, very powerful female characters – new and returning – this season,” Carver promised.
As usual things wrapped up with a look at the gag reel from the Season 9 Blu-ray/DVD set, and with that, we were done!
The “Supernatural” Season 10 premiere airs on Tuesday, October 7th, at 9 PM on The CW.
