Legend Opens Big … Really Big

Once again the old adage “If you cast Will Smith, they will come” has been proven this weekend; Francis Lawrence’s I Am Legend (review) has pulled in an estimated $76.5 million for its opening weekend, more than pretty much any projections had estimated.
Now that’s a lot of goddamn money, even if the budget was hugely inflated multiple times during its creation. Indeed, it’s a new record both for an opening weekend in December and for a Will Smith movie, another pair of events no one saw coming.
Though critically the film’s not been doing too hot, when has that ever stopped people from heading out in droves to see something? Those who like to declare that horror is dead every other week are probably very confused now.
Time will tell if the movie’s got legs enough to keep it up next weekend but needless to say Warner Bros. are pretty happy right now.
