Don’t Look in the Basement Remake a Go!
Now here’s a remake I can get behind. Know why? Because of the folks bringing this retelling of the 1973 drive-in shocker to life: Alan Rowe Kelly (I’ll Bury You Tomorrow) and Anthony G. Sumner (W.O.R.M.).
Dread Central learned tonight that pre-production is well under way, and the flick is on target to commence shooting this October in Southern Indiana. It’s scheduled for release in 2009 and will star Kelly and Sumner themselves, Zoë Daelman Chlanda, Terry M. West, Debbie DiVerde, Marv Blauvelt, Andrew Roth, Jerry Murdock, and Jeff Dylan Graham. Other lead roles are still being cast, and the filmmakers are on the hunt for their perfect heroine!
“The opportunity arose, and surprisingly no one had yet attempted a re-adaptation,” says Kelly. “Anthony and I thought it appropriate to remake this low budget gem as it was intended, by keeping it a low budget feature. Of course, the new treatment warranted many updates to make it current and believable in today’s age, but we didn’t want to lose the main focus of the storyline. New characters have been added and excellent twists will be incorporated to give new shocks to the film without losing the original’s flavor. In this version the Basement will become a very prominent part of the story. This film is a favorite among many horror fans who dig trashy genre cinema, and we want our version to remain as true to the film’s spirit as possible. Of course the word ‘remake’ stirs many a groan by fans. But we love this film so much that we can’t help but be true to its roots in Grindhouse schlock cinema. We’ll simply do our best to make the creepiest film possible!”
The screenplay is written by Alan Rowe Kelly, and the film will be produced and co-directed by Kelly and Sumner with music composed by Tom Burns and special makeup FX by Benzy. As an extra, the DVD will also include a re-mastered version of S.F. Brownrigg’s 1973 classic and interviews with Brownrigg’s filmmaker/actor son Anthony as well as some original cast members. A website will be coming soon this summer. For now you can dig on the official Don’t Look in the Basement MySpace page.
