Screamfest L.A. 2014: Director Jack Heller Talks World Premiere of Dark Was the Night
With director Jack Heller’s feature film Dark Was the Night set for its World Premiere this coming Thursday, October 16th, at 7:30 pm in Hollywood, CA, at the venerated Screamfest Film Festival, read on for our exclusive chat with the filmmaker, and have a look at some stills and a teaser trailer for the flick.
Produced by Heller, Dallas Sonnier, Stefan Nowicki, Dylan K. Narang, and Joey Carey and written by Tyler Hisel, Dark Was the Night revolves around (according to the official synopsis):
A long slumbering evil is awoken in the trees outside the remote town of Maiden Woods. Isolated and threatened, it sets its sites on the townspeople as Sheriff Paul Shields attempts to overcome the demons of his past so that he may protect those that he loves.
Actors Kevin Durand (“The Strain”), Lukas Haas (Inception), Bianca Kajlich (Halloween: Resurrection), Sabina Gadecki, Steve Agee, Heath Freeman, and Nick Damici star.
Heller, a graduate of USC who previously directed the Lionsgate feature release Enter Nowhere and is a founding member of Caliber Media, is a busy guy. With little reception on location of a Western he’s currently shooting, he managed a conversation regardless (Writer’s Note: We need more Westerns).
“I’m extremely proud of how we explored the characters through that lens,” said Heller of Dark Was the Night, “and that opportunity is what drew me to the project. I think people who expect one thing from this film will find much more. It will satisfy the audience members who came looking for a genre film, as well as those who get wrapped up by story and character.”
As for his cast, Heller stated, “Everyone was a total pro and nailed their roles! Kevin Durand, Lukas Haas, and their fellow cast members showed nothing but true dedication to their characters and to the true indie spirit of this production.”
Queried as to his feelings on the film’s Screamfest World Premiere selection, “We love Screamfest,” he stated. “Rachel (Belofsky, Screamfest head) premiered Enter Nowhere, my directorial debut, there so I have a real emotional connection to this fest, as it has championed indie filmmakers like myself.”
