Resident Evil Spreading the Virus to the Small Screen; Mortal Instruments and Perfume Also TV Candidates
Over a decade after it began, the Resident Evil film series is getting ready to wrap up with an impending sixth and final installment, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. What happens after the franchise comes to an end? Well, it looks like Alice and the gang are soon headed to the small screen. Read on!
Variety reports today that German production house Constantin Film is developing TV series based on a couple of popular film properties, including Mortal Instruments and Resident Evil. The plan is for the spin-off series of the latter to launch after Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is released into theaters.
The sixth film in the franchise was originally set for release in 2015, and the shoot was to begin this past August. Returning star Milla Jovovich’s pregnancy delayed the production, and the plan is now for the shoot to take place next summer. As a result, we can likely expect the film to head our way sometime in 2016.
No word yet on which characters will be making the leap to the small screen for the series, though we will of course keep you updated as we learn more.
As for Mortal Instruments being adapted for TV, THR provided a few more details. Constantin has hired Ed Decter, whose writer-producer credits include “Helix,” “Unforgettable,” “In Plain Sight,” and “The Client List,” as the showrunner for the “Mortal Instruments” series. The project is currently in development with production set to begin next year. No broadcast partners are yet attached to the series.
Constantin had originally planned to turn Cassandra Clare’s fantasy book series into a feature film franchise but shelved that idea after the first Mortal Instruments film, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, tanked at the box office, earning just $31 million domestically.
“It actually makes sense to do [the novels] as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz said. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”
Moszkowicz said Constantin is looking at possible television adaptations of more of its English-language movie properties, including period serial killer drama Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.
