SDCC 08: Rodriguez Brings Back Red Sonja
One of the bigger announcements from yesterday’s show was Robert Rodriguez’s Red Sonja. The adaptation of the popular sword and sandals (and lots of blood) will be coming our way from Millennium Films next year.
Rodriguez is serving as producer on the film with his long-time second unit director Douglas Aarniokoski in the director’s chair. Oh, and Red Sonja will be played by none other than Rose McGowan. Luscious, delicious and deadly Rose McGowan. What more could you want? How about a logline:
In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical redhead blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath
Rodriguez was asked during the presentation panel if he had any intentions of wussing out on the gore that we all would expect from a movie about a warrior woman seeking vengeance. His response? ”My name’s Robert Rodriguez. That’s “RR”. That means a double dose of R-rating.”
Apparently the joke was well received. Rodriguez also made mention that when one thinks of iconic art from Conan or Red Sonja, one sees them standing on a pile of bodies. He promise that the Red Sonja film will deliver on that imagery as well.
Production is set to kick off in October, so expect more updates soon!
