Redrum: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Shining Carries a Tune

So many classic horror films have been getting the musical treatment lately that we’re not at all surprised that someone would come up with one based upon Stephen King’s The Shining! Sing along with us! “I’m just gonna bash your brains in! Bash them iiiiinnnnn! Bash them iiiinnnnnnn!”

From the Press Release:
The sick and twisted characters of The Overlook Hotel have been resurrected. However, this time with some in your face, laugh out loud singing credentials. The Stephen King horror novel turned Stanley Kubrick film classic turned musical parody showcased Tony Award winner Alice Ripley (Next to Normal) as Wendy and Tony Award nominated actor Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel) as Jack from last night’s sneak peek at Pearl Studios NYC. The musical features book and lyrics by Joe Lovero (Book of Leo) and composer extraordinaire Jon Hugo Ungar.

Writer/director Lovero is elated to bring this quick-witted musical to life: “REDRUM was born like most major works of musical theater – drunken spouses on their 2nd (3rd?) bottle of wine, watching one of their favorite horror movies for the 1,000th time, crying out ridiculous song ideas while wondering, ‘Why hasn’t anyone turned this into a campy musical yet?!’ This of course leads to the next logical step, a 2:30 am Craigslist post from a sleep-deprived writer/director, seeking a composer to ‘make beautiful musical theater with’ – because everyone knows all great composers seek work on Craigslist from writers that promise to pay them with his wife’s legendary meatballs.”

Other cast showcased in last night’s sneak peek include Remy Zaken (Spring Awakening) as the “boy who shines” Danny; Mark Price (Mary Poppins) as Tony (aka the little boy that lives inside Danny’s mouth); Andre Ward (Rock of Ages) as “top chef” Dick Hallorann; Cait Fairbanks (Heathers: The Musical) and Brittney Lee Hamilton (The Countess of Storyville) as the “come play with us” Grady Sisters; Max Roll (our token British actor) as the murder enticing caretaker, Delbert Grady, and Stuart Ullman; Tom Deckman (Spamalot) as Bill Watson, Lloyd the Bartender, the infamous Bear, plus the Female Doctor; and Todd Alan Johnson (Aida) as none other than the “creepy voice” of The Overlook Hotel.

Lead Producers on the musical parody extravaganza include Rob Baunoch III, Michael Mayhugh, and Tara Sickmeier of HIPZEE, a Brooklyn-based Entertainment Company. “Joe and Jon have created a dark and funny throwback to classic musical theatre. Obviously, we will save a seat sideline for Jack Nicholson,” states team HIPZEE.

REDRUM: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of ‘The Shining’ is set to open next Halloween season 2015.
