The Angry Video Game Nerd James Rolfe Talks Plan 9
Recently we sat down with one of the actors who appear in the upcoming remake of Plan 9 from Outer Space, entitled Plan 9, James Rolfe, better known to fans as The Angry Video Game Nerd, to get his take on the remake. Read on for the skinny.
“I got involved when the director, John Johnson, contacted me after seeing me mention the remake in a video I did,” said Rolfe. “When they reached out to me to see if I would do it, I was was like, ‘Of course!’ The original Plan 9 is one of my favorite movies. Ed Wood was just so ambitious. He never really got the credit that he deserved when he was alive.”
“The tone of the movie was simple… what if Ed Wood had the money to make the movie today? The remake is still a very low budget film, but that’s the angle. What would Wood have done? He wasn’t trying to make a bad movie; he was trying his best, and that’s the way John Johnson envisioned this. I get the negative reaction from some people. I totally get it, but I can tell you that John’s heart is TOTALLY in it. Making this movie sounds like such a crazy idea, but when you talk to him, you can tell that he really has a passion for this movie. No matter what, though, there’s always going to be polarizing reactions to projects like this. I complain about remakes happening all the time, but this one… it’s not like there’s a major studio behind it. There’s a lot of sincerity to makes this the best movie it could be while paying respect to the original. Plan 9 is a totally different film, and we’ll always have the original. It’s not going anywhere, and no one is messing with that.”
Rolfe continues, “Being there, and being on the set and everything, I can tell you that there are little homages to the original film here and there, but ultimately this is a pretty different movie. Some of the same character types are in it… hints to some of the same dialogue here and there. Johnson unfortunately did not have his chiropractor show up halfway through the film wearing a cape over his face to play a major role… but that would have been awesome!”
Monster Pictures is thrilled to announce the worldwide DVD premiere of Plan 9, a modern re-imagining of the classic film Plan 9 from Outer Space, on the 19th of February, 2015.
Brian Krause (“Charmed,” Sleepwalkers), James Rolfe (The Angry Video Game Nerd), Matthew Ewald (Fox’s “Galidor”), Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave), Addy Miller (“The Walking Dead”), and Michael Christopher (Dawn of the Dead) star.
