Mega Shark Vs. Giant Squid, More AFM Weirdness

default-featured-image

The Day the Earth StoppedYou know what’s great about a title like Mega Shark vs. Giant Squid? The title doubles as the plot. It’s about a mega-sized shark battling a giant-sized squid. What more do you possibly need to know? It’s Mega Shark vs. Giant Squid!

The annual American Film Market begins a day after we vote for our next President, running from the 5th through the 12th of November. One of my favorite things around this time of year is heading over to AFM’s website and taking a look around to learn about some of the new DTV/made-for-cable movies already in the can and in the works for the coming year.

For example, I learned of a Sci-Fi Channel flick in the works titled Ice Twisters, about a liquid nitrogen weather experiment meant to fight global warming that ends up spawning tornadoes that shoot razor-sharp ice shards. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

I then decided to see what The Asylum has cooking for ’09 and staring back at me right in the face was the title Mega Shark vs. Giant Squid. Since I’ve not heard any word of a Hollywood blockbuster due out next year entitled Megalodon vs. Kraken I have to assume Mega Shark vs. Giant Squid is not one of The Asylum’s notorious mockbusters.

The plot is described simplistically at this time as, “The California coast is terrorized by two enormous prehistoric sea creatures as they battle each other for supremacy of the ocean.”

At least I know for sure there will be at least one Asylum movie coming next year that I’m definitely going to be psyched for. I pray this doesn’t end up being another nothing happening Asylum crapfest along the lines of (UGH!) “>Supercroc (review) or (DOUBLE UGH!) “>Monster (review).

The AFM entry does list a writer/director, Jack Perez, who previously directed the DVD sequel Wild Things 2, the MTV creature comedy Monster Island, and (using a pseudonym) The Asylum’s Omen mockbuster, 666: The Child. I’m pulling for you, Jack. Please don’t let us all down. I very much wanna see a mega shark fight a giant squid and I want it to kick ass!

Other Asylum films being promoted for next year at AFM include a Transmorphers prequel, two global catastrophe movies, another fantasy dragon flick, and a teen sex comedy titled 18 Year Old Virgin.

But before 2008 is over we’ll be getting the self-explanatory Sunday School Musical, the Jurgen Prochnow fantasy epic Merlin and the War of the Dragons, and the awesomely titled The Day the Earth Stopped, their mockbuster take on Keanu Reeves’ The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. The Asylum version will have massive robots from outer space appearing is all the world’s major capitols demanding C. Thomas Howell and Judd Nelson prove the value of human civilization or face annihilation. I’m assuming the film ends with humanity being wiped out.
