Horror Spreading Across Spain
A new article focusing on the burgeoning film community in Spain appeared in Variety over the weekend (thanks to Heather for pointing it out), which makes mention of some very interesting sounding new films on their way from the country.
And they’re not all horror either. Though our genre has done very well for Spain thanks to films like REC and The Orphanage, filmmakers are beginning to expand their horizons and try new things, like the first Spanish robot movie, Eva.
Spanish filmmaker Luiso Berdejo is responsible for the upcoming Kevin Costner horror film The New Daughter, and sibling writing/directing duo Alex and David Pastor will soon be delivering the viral outbreak movie Carriers to us, so it’s not like the Spanish are losing their edge, just trying out new things. Horror is still at the top of their lists.
As for Spanish productions, several titles are mentioned for which little info is available such as The Homecoming by Sergio Sanchez, Julia’s Eyes by Guillem Morales, and a remake of The Uncertain Guest. There’s at least someone with a sense of humor over there, too, as one of the biggest buzz films of Sitges is a splatter spoof called Sexykiller (pictured, trailer is below), about a string of police-baffling campus slayings being perpetrated by the most unsuspecting of girls.
And wouldn’t you know it; the Spanish government is not only happy about this new trend, they’re encouraging it by investing the equivalent of $1.5 million a pop for each Spanish-language film produced. That’s the kind of government I want.
Not that we need to tell you after all the good stuff they’ve output so far, but Spain is definitely a country to keep our horror-loving eyeballs on. As long as they don’t become encapsulated in their respective sub-genre like Japan did, I expect we’ll continue to see good stuff coming from them for years to come.
