Future of It Follows Up in the Air; Theatrical Expansion or VOD Release?

The original plan for David Robert Mitchell’s critically-acclaimed It Follows (review) was for the film to hit VOD outlets later this month, but after a wildly successful theatrical release this past weekend, the future is uncertain. Here’s what we know so far.

As outlined by Indiewire, It Follows scooped up an impressive $160,000 over the weekend, despite only being released in four theaters throughout New York and Los Angeles. As a result, Radius-TWC began telling theaters that they were going to expand the release on March 27th – the date originally set aside for a VOD release.

Now it seems that the company is unsure what to do with the movie, as several sources have indicated that the March 27th VOD release is back on, leaving a theatrical expansion up in the air. This potentially is a result of pressure from cable companies and other home viewing platforms, suggests the site.

Tom Quinn, Co-President of Radius-TWC, has not yet specified further release details, nor will he confirm or deny any suggestions about the near future of It Follows. So hold tight, friends. We should have more information real soon.

Synopsis:
For 19-year-old Jay (Monroe), the fall should be about school, boys, and weekends at the lake. Yet, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.
