Rings Not Actually a Prequel to The Ring Remake
There’s so much misinformation here on the world wide web that it can sometimes be impossible to tell what’s true, unless it comes directly from the horse’s mouth. We’re wiping egg off our faces here in the Dread offices today, as a big ole correction regarding Rings has come to our attention.
Erroneously reported as a prequel to the 2002 remake of The Ring, director F. Javier Gutierrez set the record straight over on Twitter this morning, clarifying the rumors and letting us know that we’ve all been wrong about this one.
“Hey peeps. Rings is NOT a prequel,” he wrote, “the story takes place 13 years AFTER The Ring.”
So feel free to breathe a big ole sigh of relief, those of you who were worried that the film would center on the origins of Samara and the infamous tape!
As previously reported, Alex Roe (The 5th Wave) has nabbed the male lead in the film, starring opposite Italian actress Matilda Lutz. He will be playing Holt, who is the boyfriend to Lutz’s character and becomes distant from her after watching the tape.

Rings will hit theaters on November 13, 2015.
Gutierrez is directing from a script written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacob Aaron Estes.
Based on a Japanese cult success, the first U.S. film went on to gross $249 million at the worldwide box office. That was enough to justify a sequel, which didn’t match the first one’s B.O. power but still grossed $160 million worldwide.
