Season 2 Synopsis:
Salem’s ruthless leading witch, Mary Sibley (Montgomery), has just completed the elusive Grand Rite – a deadly supernatural ritual that unleashed a devastating plague on the town’s unsuspecting citizens. As death and disease continue to spread through the war-torn village, Mary must face off against adversaries old and new, from within Salem and beyond, who are vying for her throne in the battle for control over Salem.
Left for dead physically and emotionally, former war hero John Alden (West) returns to Salem to take down the woman he loves, Mary, before she can destroy everything and everyone around her. Haunted by guilt, Cotton Mather (Gabel) is on a path of redemption, determined to right the wrongs he left behind. The protector of the abused, Mercy (Eberle) becomes the abuser as she seeks vengeance against the one who betrayed her – Mary. With the sudden return of the son (Bell) she thought she gave up years ago, Mary must also contend with emerging threats from within the ranks of her own coven, which conspired against her to secretly keep him alive – including her mysterious servant Tituba (Madekwe), whose allegiances are slippery and motives unclear. Mary’s most vital task is shoring up support from Anne Hale (Merchant), whose newly discovered gifts can render her either a powerful ally or a deadly foe.
Mary learns early on just how much help she needs when the aftermath of the Grand Rite prompts new visitors to descend upon Salem, each with their own agendas – including Countess Marburg (Lawless), the last of an ancient and powerful line of German witches; her charming, cultured, and extremely loyal son, Baron Sebastian Marburg (Doyle); and the mysterious Dr. Samuel Wainwright (Townsend), who looks to uncover the secrets of Salem and its plague while its first victim, Isaac Walton (Goldberg), lies helpless.
