Scream Factory Announces Italian Horrors Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness to Blu-ray for Summer
Though I’m all in favor of some of the forgotten gems of the 1990’s direct-to-video boom getting some 21st century Blu-ray lovin’, not exactly sure Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness are all that deserving.
That said, I’m sure there’s an audience for Scream Factory’s just announced double feature Blu-ray of Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness (coming in late August).
Metamorphosis is probably only remembered for its Frankenhooker-esque VHS box with light-up eyes and an electrical noise it made when you pressed a button on the front.
Italian b-movie actor George Eastman directed Metamorphosis, a 1990 Fly knock-off about a genius geneticist slowly turning into a homicidal lizard man after his experiment goes wrong. After all, if the experiment went right, it wouldn’t make for much of a movie.
Gotta say, I’ve seen this one and came away thinking the premise sounded a lot more entertaining than the results. I’d be far more interested if they were giving the Blu-ray treatment to the vastly superior Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor, also from 1990.
The other half of this double feature is Troll 2 director Claudio Fragasso’s 1990 spookfest Beyond Darkness about a minister and his wife moving into a haunted house with typically sinister results.
Never seen Beyond Darkness, but amongst the user review headlines that came up when I looked it up on IMDB were “boring and incoherent,” “Yaaaaaaaawn,” “Not Even Bob Villa Could Fix This House,” and “Hip Priest!” Seemed pretty skippable until I read “Hip Priest!” Sold!
Both films star actor Gene Lebrock. Two of his only six movies. Four more, and we can have a complete box set.
