Where to begin? First off — if you’re looking for a good supernatural thriller let me assure you, this is not it. In fact Passengers is less of a horror movie than Ghost was. The main difference between the two is that Ghost was at least entertaining. Let’s look at the premise shall we?

After a horrible plane crash (of which we never actually see) a therapist (Hathaway) is brought in to help the survivors cope with their new found post traumatic stress disorder. Everything goes along smoothly until one by one they start disappearing. Good thing she still has the one happy-go-lucky charismatic survivor (Wilson) in her corner to help her deal with this ever deepening mystery. In all honesty my description makes the movie a lot more interesting than it actually is so allow me to be clear — this flick sucks.

The mystery that abounds isn’t really that hard to figure out. The crux of the film is spent knee deep in sappy nonsense, that seems all the more ridiculous once the twist (there’s always a twist) is revealed, and what little suspense there is comes off about as riveting as a mid-grade Lifetime original movie. Passengers is tame even by chick flick standards.

The DVD and the Blu-ray share the same set of special features with the exception of the latter being BD Live enabled. Honestly, I can’t blame Sony for not going the extra mile to give hi-def fans some extra goodies. I’m sure that even they knew they had a stinker on their hands.

What is included in terms of bonus materials is strictly of the cookie-cutter variety. There’s a commentary track that does nothing to make the experience any more enjoyable, two paint-by-numbers making-of featurettes that ended up being slightly more entertaining than the film itself, and several deleted scenes that would have done nothing but made the experience that much more grueling had they have been left in the movie.

In short if you’re looking for some good in-flight entertainment, or even just something that could be construed as slightly interesting, call up your travel agent and book yourself on all expenses paid trip to a better movie. You’ll be a lot better off as these passengers have been delayed in Dullsville indefinitely. You’ve been warned.
