Shadow Theory (Short, 2015)
Starring Katie Stegeman, Eddie Navarro, Mia Talerico
Directed by Kristian Hanson
Sometimes a full length film can play a story as straight as a razor, no plot twists, characters in order, all adding up to literally no surprises even though it’s obvious that the creators are trying to turn you around mentally. With some short films, even with an abbreviated runtime, you can have events swirling in such a fashion so that the end payoff will befuddle you to an amusing level.
In the case of Kristian Hanson’s short film Shadow Theory, we’re eyewitnesses to a heinous crime that will disgust and dismay viewers, but it pales in comparison to how you’ll feel when it’s all over.
Katie Stegeman stars as Detective Olson, a dutiful cop who also was a mother, and her demons are hindering her from fully delving herself into a case of a family that was tortured and killed by a ruthless individual, leaving a traumatized survivor (Navarro) at the scene. The questioning commences, and we find out some information that will certainly bend your brainpan, and at the risk of making the spoiler-haters cry for their mommies, I’ll ease up on any further info. Rest assured, the complete product is entertaining to an extent, and aside from one horrific example of overacting (I won’t give up the thespian’s name), each performance blends well with the condensed length of the short (around 15 minutes).
Overall, Shadow Theory is a decent watch if you don’t have the time allotment to invest in a full feature, but don’t expect too much, and you won’t be let down.
