Blood of Love, The (Short, 2015)
Starring Mali Elfman, Chris Stack, Norman Roth
Directed by Jeff Meyers
There are some people who will go to the ends of the earth to preserve the lives of the ones they love, and in the case of Jeff Meyers’ The Blood of Love, a woman named Kate (Elfman) will kill for her dearly departed husband… wait, did I just say “dearly departed?”
You see, Josh (Stack) has passed away (apparently numerous times), and his bride, seemingly beside herself with grief, has come into possession of a machine from a mysterious man known as Mr. Ashling. The machine acts as a transfer station, processing blood delivered into it and into Josh’s veins, resurrecting him. Now when I say that the blood is “delivered,” allow me to elucidate as to how this delivery system is operated: Kate gussies herself up in her best club-hopping attire, lures in some poor drunk soul to come back to her home, and promptly dispatches him in a way resembling a cattle bleed, hanging him upside down and letting his crimson fluid run out into a pot. The blood is then run through the machine and into Josh’s stream, and then VOILA! Instantly reanimated spouse (kind of sounds like a demented step-by-step cooking recipe).
Complications arise when Josh’s reawakenings begin to last considerably less and less with each transfusion, and it’s up to Kate to come up with a quick fix if she ever wants her husband to see the sun again… and again and again.
Meyers takes what would be looked at as a sad situation and spins it around with some terrific gore and stylized visuals. For an 18-minute runtime, The Blood of Love definitely provides a sweet look at the deranged side of love – I mean, if she was doing this BECAUSE she loved her spouse, imagine what she’d be capable of if she hated him? Absolutely worth a watch if you get the opportunity.
