Oh, those magnificent things that go bump in the night… they always will chill us to the bone, no matter how big or small. In John William Ross’ ultra-spooky The Thing in the Apartment, simplicity takes center stage in a no-frills presentation, instead relying on many quiet moments and the absence of light to enhance the fright factor. This one was pure fun to ingest.

Peering into the apartment of a beautiful young woman (Jones), her late night is turned into a living nightmare when she swears someone or something is paying her a visit, and in a hasty phone call made to her best friend (Renee), we see just how much the fear has overtaken her. When her bestie heads into the apartment to investigate, the dialogue drops, the illumination lessens, and your skin will crawl. At the risk of completely ruining a 10-minute short, I’ll spare any further details.

Rest assured, fear-mongers, the night won’t go exactly as planned, and Ross uses every minute of this quickie to freak the pee out of your bladders. As I mentioned earlier, scaled-down intricacies make this a well-produced product. Slam-bang effects? Not entirely. Award-winning performances? Needn’t be. A piece of work that will make you think twice about killing the light before heading off to beddie-bye? ABSOLUTELY.

Give this one a watch if you’ve got the cojones.
