Pi Day Die Day (2016)

PidaydiedayStarring Ari Lehman, Colton Tapp, Justin Rose

Directed by Michael E. Cullen II

Yet another holiday gets a horror movie infusion – this time, we celebrate “Pi Day” – March 14th. While this day might not exactly mean too much to the masses, it has its following among mathematicians, and now director Michael E. Cullen II celebrates with a little old fashioned blood letting…problem is, that’s all this feature turns out to be: old fashioned, with nothing terribly new to offer. Grab your books and laptops, kids, cause Pi Day Die Day is coming to your classroom.

Ari Lehman (the very 1st Jason) plays a high-school principal in Ohio and is honestly struggling to keep his precious institute of higher learning on the serene side after a string of murders is plaguing his student body…oh the irony. A rash of brutal killings is reducing his population, and the guy is honestly concerned about a pie-eating contest that’s going to be cancelled on account of the killings? Priorities, people, priorities. As the vicious crimes start to reach a little further towards homeroom, Principal Hayward extends a needful mitt towards the school’s mathematics teacher, Mr. Douglas (Mark Klein) and a couple of police detectives to sift for clues in the hopes of stopping the bloodshed for good.

While some of the kills are entertaining, they can get a bit muddled through the schizophrenic mix of both practical and CGI effects – the Jekyll and Hyde work doesn’t hold water for long, and alongside the suspect acting performances, the notion that we’re watching something new and refreshing goes swirling fairly quickly. Cullen should be applauded for his willingness to toss it back to the good old days of slasher horror, but isn’t this something we’ve all seen quite a bit before? Feel free to give it a look for comparison and contrast purposes, otherwise this one will stand WAY back in a very long line.
