Ceramic Tango (Short, 2016)
Starring Holy Scar, Richard Cardinal, Jennifer May Walker
Directed by Patricia Chica
A disconsolate man named Riley (Scar) stares emptily at the tiling in his bathroom. In his simplest state, he’s doing something that we’ve all done thousands of times; yet, today is the day that his biggest fear will manifest itself and terrify him to his weakened core in Patricia Chica’s short film Ceramic Tango.
Chica goes the extra mile in her presentation of a personally tormented young man who has just been dealt a most unkind blow of sorts and the inevitable horror that he must look straight in its blackened, demonic face – pretty spooky stuff, indeed.
The intruder is portrayed by Richard Cardinal, and his performance is best described in one word: unnerving. While Riley laments his situation, the evil omnipresence lies in wait for the moment that the interminable anguish finally takes over Riley’s psyche.
Overall, it’s a fairly simple premise, but Chica’s style and flash for directing display a completely different facet other than just one man’s worst case scenario coming front and center. Her vision takes you inside his disquietude and gives it a persona, ultimately leaving him to deal with a very imposing bit of company, whether he wants it or not.
I can absolutely recommend Ceramic Tango as one of the better 10-minute views you’ll see in a while, so if you’re game, check it out below.
