President’s Day (2016)
Starring Monica Ricketts, David Zuckerman, Jud Zumwalt
Directed by David Zuckerman
If the upcoming Presidential debacle… I’m sorry, I meant to say “Presidential Race to The White House” was as sick and twisted as David Zuckerman’s off-the-wall horror/comedy President’s Day, I might just have to take some interest in it… then again, probably not.
This odd little production starts off with your stereotypical small group of everyday types heading for a little relaxing stretch at a cabin in the woods (how terrifyingly original). Kinda makes you wonder with all these specific types of friends, would they REALLY be hanging out and spending valuable blocks of time cohabiting the same space for an indeterminable span? Ah well, that’s neither here nor there, and I’m not in the mood to overthink characters’ motivations – I just want to sit back and enjoy the carnage.
So here we sit with the nerd, the jock, the slut, the good girl, yadda, yadda, yadda… all waiting to express each and every one of their exclusive characteristics towards this specific scenario they’ve been placed in. However, something happens here that I wasn’t expecting on even the most cellular of levels – you ready for this? Perk up your ears for this one, kiddies: I WAS ENTERTAINED. In a twist that’ll be sure to raise the ire of Evil Dead fans everywhere, a book of the dead is read from, and you guessed it: The zombified issuances of our forefathers rise from the grave to wreak havoc upon this band of sure-to-be victims.
Zuckerman plants tongue firmly in cheek with this one, and for all intents and purposes, it is a fairly fun watch, aside from the amazingly hammish, over-the-top acting performances, ultra-low-budget FX, and overall inane plot direction. Hell, we all know this isn’t going before the Oscar selection committee any time soon, and who cares? It’s a fun midnight watch that should and (hopefully) will Trump any election coverage that will air over the next few months… see what I just did there?
