Dry-deadpan comedy, especially in a film with somewhat dark overtones, always was more appealing to me than the slapstick, off-the-wall stuff. In Ingrid Jungermann’s black-comedy, Women Who Kill, the art of playing it straight even through the biggest laughs works to an admirable level even though the movie tails off precipitously in the second half – step inside and let’s check this one out.

Centering around a couple of former lovers (Jungermann and Carr) – the two host a middle-ground podcast that focuses on entirely what the title states: Women Who Kill. Along the timeline of their show, the two venture out to interview a serial killer (played by Annette O’Toole in a fantastic performance), and the inevitable subject of their breakup once again comes full circle. The cohesiveness of the two characters, even though their at differing ends of a fractured relationship, is one of comedic gold. While this former duo manages to put their distractions aside in order to deliver their show, a third entry into their dynamic will enter the fray: a woman named Simone (Vand), and it’s obvious that she borders on the “interesting” side of things…so much that Carr’s character suspects to the bone that she very well could be a serial killer – what a show that would make!

After a mysterious death rocks the couple’s world, it’s growing increasingly more possible that the new gal in the circle is the one with the murderous tendencies – all in all it leads to some genuinely funny instances, but the latter half of the movie starts to run in a very general, blueprinted format, almost abandoning the humor that drove the film to the dance and leaving it waiting on the sidewalk. Overall, the film has some sterling portrayals, from starters to backup roles, and even though O’Toole’s cameo is far too short, she deserves the MVP of the film, as her exuberant yet infinitely creepy role is one that should be boxed up and stretched out as a sitcom in itself. Women Who Kill is one of those movies that won’t exactly fit on your horror shelf, but aside from its shortcomings, is a dark comedy that will help you pass the time in between all those depressing “Dateline” episodes – give it a look when it becomes available.
