THE LITCH Review – Acid Bath Productions’ Leading Loon Is At It Again!
Starring James Balsamo, Dave Stein, Tom Sizemore
Written by James Balsamo and Bryan Stumpf
Directed by James Balsamo
You know, I could provide you all with a literal laundry-list of films (not just horror) that would entertain you and the family on any given night – tales of intrigue, fright, overwhelming joy and utter heartbreak – you know, the kinds of stuff that can tug at your heartstrings one moment and attempt to pluck them out and use them as tuning implements the next. Anyways, if it’s something a bit more demented that you’re looking for…something that might have you questioning one’s sanity, that is – allow me to direct you towards the dark end of the hallway. Please keep all appendages to yourself and away from the bars as this one likes to bite from time to time – his name is Balsamo, and if you’re familiar with his work, you all know what I’m talking about.
The film is called The Litch, and with any specific James Balsamo title in which he’s presided over directorial duties, you can bet your bippy that there will be plenty of cameos, chicks, and complete craziness when it comes to visuals, and this is certainly no exception to that rule. This particular slide down the cuckoo-corridor stars Balsamo himself as Vinnie, a low-level thief whose latest score has him snatching up a gemstone that possesses the power to unharness a most violent entity of sorts – The Litch (Stein). This zombified witch of sorts isn’t too pleased with being woken from his slumber and proceeds to wipe out Vinnie’s family and cohorts alike, only to then reincarnate them as flesh-chewing hordes of the undead. If that doesn’t present enough of an issue for our leading man, the police believe he’s behind the killings and now his own boss has put out a hit on him – talk about a crappy time in your life!
Boosted by cameos from names such as Tom Sizemore, Debra Lamb and Troma’s own Lloyd Kaufman, the movie does present a generous amount of entertainment, and believe me when I tell you there’s plenty to keep your eyes on with this one. It’s a simply constructed, all-out lesson in celluloid insanity – look, if you want a titanium-structured plot and rich character development that will have you measuring its depth in fathoms, then take your picky butt elsewhere. If you just happen to be hankering for a movie that’s brimming with ample doses of blood, breast-acular action and Balsamo himself, then The Litch might just be up your darkened alley.
