Available for PlayStation Vita and PC (reviewed)

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack released in February as part of the selection of PlayStation Vita launch titles, and the game received rave reviews with critics praising its fun and addictive gameplay as much as its creative ingenuity. Now, it’s nearly six months later, and developer Drinkbox Studios has brought the hilarious cult classic to PC via Steam. Of course, this means many of the special controls have been changed and puzzles have been redesigned to suit the switch to classic keyboard and mouse or gamepad controls. Luckily, the redesigned game is able to capitalize on its successor’s triumphs and produce a new title that is just as entertaining for a new audience.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack doesn’t feature much of a storyline, but it more than makes up for the fact with an undeniable charm and wonderful humor. You play as an especially grumpy blob that has managed to escape his laboratory confines and is now out to devour anything that would stand between he and his freedom. As the blob devours objects, he continues to grow and can consume even larger objects. With a humorous 50’s science fiction feel, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is a fun and quirky title that is a blast from start to finish even if the game can be completed in a short several hours.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is a platformer at its core, but you’ll have to solve a variety of puzzles to make your way to more objects for consumption in order to get larger and complete stages. You’ll also have to master new powers such as magnetism or electricity to safely navigate to the end of levels. There are 6 worlds to explore in the game with multiple stages for each world. You’ll gain points for the more items you consume, and you will be awarded medals for reaching the highest scores. The blob’s friends will be hiding in each stage as well, and you’ll want to rescue them all in order to get 100% of the game completed. It’s a fun title that will have you coming back until all the secrets have been found and you’re satisfied with your rank on the online leaderboards.

The PC release of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack looks nearly identical to the original release. What you will notice is that the game is more accessible than ever before with the option to use multiple controller formats, unlock Steam achievements, create Steam cloud saves and tackle newly redesigned puzzles in multiple stages. One big concern with the port to PC will be how the puzzles have been changed to match the new controls, but luckily, everything works fine and is likely easier to control than with the PlayStation Vita. Of course, the same cutscenes, dialogue (or lack thereof) and catchy music remains to round out a very nice presentation.

If you already own the PlayStation Vita version of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, you’ll probably not want to purchase the game on Steam. Most of the content hasn’t been changed with the only huge difference coming with the new control design. Still, this is one of the best games of the year for any platform, so players who haven’t experienced the joy of being a blob need to play this game. Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is one part Katamari Damacy, one part platforming and one part awesome. You won’t be able to put the game down until you’ve completed it, and you’ll keep coming back as you search for all of the hidden items and reach for a high position on the game’s leaderboards. Consuming waste has never been more than it is in Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack.
