PSYCHO GOREMAN Blu-ray Review – Bathe in the Special Features Including Director’s Commentary & Trading Cards
Directed by Steven Kostanski
Written by Steven Kostanski
Starring Nita-Josse Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks and Matthew Ninaber
Steven Kostanski’s PG: Psycho Goreman is already a beloved horror fantasy and it makes sense that such a passion project would wind of being a favorite of Spielberg obsessed film fans. Now, the fully loaded Blu-ray has landed on Earth with a bevy of special features that harken back to the golden days of DVD in the early 2000s.
Leave it to a couple of imaginative kids to uncover a space gem that allows the bearer to control an evil destructor named the Archduke of Nightmares only to rename him Psycho Goreman, effectively making him a new playmate. PG’s reactivation, however, grabs the attention of his personal rogues’s gallery of alien combatants that lay siege to the suburbs hellbent on destroying their ancient enemy for good. It’s for kids!
The Psycho Goreman Blu-ray is also for the kids at heart and every cosmic character gets their due in a fairly exhaustive collection of special features. It’s always a good sign when the extras are actually longer than the feature film and the disc that Kostanski and Crazy Ball Productions present is positively stacked. A comprehensive (and hilarious) Director Commentary highlights the gore gags of Masters FX and fun facts about the cast. Plus, a One-on-One interview with the director is also illuminating, giving you a little insight into the glorious weirdness inside the man that also gave us The Void, The Divide and Father’s Day.
“The Music of PG: Psycho Goreman” reveals the genius of the group Blitz//Berlin and their alter egos, Pleasure Chamber and Lil Caesar, the fictional hair metal and rap groups featured on the soundtrack. The 90’s style end credits rap song “PG for short” is a major highlight. There’s also a massive focus on the effects with features diving into fight choreography, pre-viz, filming the epic Paladin Fight (you’ll see), the magic of miniatures, and a tour of the creature shop.
There’s also a PG: Psycho Goreman Trading Cards Gallery reminiscent of the hard-to-find cards from 1986’s Neon Maniacs. All in all, it’s hard to remember a Blu-ray in the last couple of years that is this jam-packed with extras. The special features turn PG: Psycho Goreman into a tentpole horror film that feels like your very own bloody summer blockbuster. The kids take PG home with them and now you can, too.
Summary
Fans of toy lines and tie-in merchandise connected to the age-old summer blockbuster, the team behind Psycho Goreman pull out all the stops with this fully loaded throwback Blu-ray.
