‘In Tenebras: Into the Darkness’ Review: The First In A Promising New Trilogy

in tenebras: into the darkness

Written and directed by Martin Nuza, In Tenebras: Into the Darkness starts off the coast of Gibraltar in 1941. There, a U-boat is captured containing several crew members (the majority being deceased) and an unknown cargo crate that was never spoken of after the end of WWII.

Until now.

Flash forward to the present, and extroverted Hank (a note-worthy Anthony Loddo) reconnects with his long-lost brother, Josh (a somewhat stiff Johan Wickholm) to discuss the long-lost treasure map left by their grandfather. That map will take the brothers on a treacherous journey through the secret tunnels of the rock at Gibraltar. The trick is, how do they get inside undetected, and then escape unnoticed?

In order to find this unclaimed wealth, (which is suspected as a direct link to an ancient curse) the brothers bring along sister Chelsea to round out the family reunion and make grandpa (and dad) posthumously proud. But things soon go off kilter and their charmed Raiders of the Lost Ark fantasy goes awry when they accidentally unleash the clandestine plague known to the military and government as Tenebras.

Tenebras (a Latin term) translates into “darkness” or “gloom” which reverberates in tandem with the heart stomping tension that follows the three siblings on their pathway through the bowels of this enormous uninhabited relic. While they sneer through rival bickering covering typical themes such as age, physicality and intelligence level, special forces are now tracking their movements in the hopes of removing them unharmed yet securing their confidential mission. It was as if The Goonies was created for adults and the monsters were stylized by Mahal Empire. It’s THAT much fun!

In Tenebras: Into The Darkness brilliantly orchestrates a clash between two strong iconic figures: Major Cummings (Costas Mandylor) and Captain Shaw (Michael Pare). The narrative sets the stage for an epic confrontation between these formidable characters in a nail-biting scene on the breathtaking landmark. This is the climatic moment, revealing the implementation of a new world order and it may just freak you out worse than COVID. Diving into this film with no expectations, no research, and very little knowledge will bring great reward.

With the superior performances of Mandylor and Paré, you’re in for a wild and crazy tour of the monolithic limestone mountain through captivating angles and visually stunning landscapes. You may even forget the feeling of something potentially lurking in the shadows of these manmade passages. Is that the sound of rats? Ghosts? Perhaps something far more sinister?

Whatever it is, you had me at “inspired by actual events” and I am ready for the next installment as In Tenebras is set to be a trilogy. The second installment In Tenebras: Timelines is currently in pre-production.

In Tenebras: Into the Darkness is available now on digital.
