The Best Horror Movies Streaming Now on Prime Video
Last Updated: October 3, 2024
Prime Video is giving genre fans a ton of titles this October. While not all of it is as terrifying as we hoped, there are still plenty of interesting things to check out this month. The streamer is feeding television addicts with season 2 of The Devil’s Hour and Citadel: Diana. Prime will also ensure that sci-fi kids feel the love by adding seven of the original Star Trek movies and the Stargate trilogy. So, while the app will have thrillers like Crawl, Doctor Sleep, and Don’t Worry Darling there is plenty of stuff to watch that is off the beaten path. It feels like the site is planning to be our cozy corner between Halloween marathons, and that is an important job. However, I am here to bring chaos, so the titles I chose this month reflect that. I have assembled an eccentric, eclectic, and weird hit list that I am excited to share with you.
Check out which 5 titles have my attention this October.
1984 (dir. Michael Radford)
In a totalitarian future, a man tasked to rewrite history attempts to rebel and falls in love with a woman who shares ideas. This movie is based on the George Orwell novel of the same name and stars John Hurt. Suzanna Hamilton and Richard Burton round out the cast of this dystopian sci-fi thriller. Like all weird tweens, I had an Orwell phase and read quite a few of his books I did not fully understand the weight of at that age. So, I am ready to see how 1984 translated to the big screen back in 1984. However, I am also a little afraid that it might be too soon to watch it during this current election cycle. Either way, I have high hopes for this adaptation, but I believe it will live up to them.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (dir. Don Siegel)
A small-town doctor discovers his community is being replaced by alien duplicates. This 1956 gem is one of my favorites to revisit from its era. Invasion of the Body Snatchers has everything a girl could possibly want. It has an alien invasion, body horror, paranoia, and sheer panic. I am jealous of everyone who saw this movie at a drive-in after hitting a soda shoppe in the 50s. This version of this beloved story stars Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. I highly recommend you double-feature it with the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland if you want to get on my nerdy level. It is also available on Prime Video this month. Both films work even though they came out over 20 years apart. However, I am a sucker for all versions of this tale so I could just be biased.
Killer Cakes
Bakers and horror effects artists join forces for the most nightmarish bake-off you have ever seen. These cakes promise to be disgusting, realistic, disturbing, and sweet. I am not the biggest fan of game shows, but I do love the hell out of Matthew Lillard. So, I am willing to check out a horror-themed baking show he co-hosts with other horror folks. The show is co-hosted by Danielle Harris (Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge), Lillard (Scream (1996), Thirteen Ghosts (2001)), and Nikk Alcaraz (Practical Peculiarities). I am here for the intersection of food and horror creatives, so I suspect this might be a surprisingly good time. If I am wrong, please do not shoot the messenger because I will tell you to liver alone. Excuse me while I see myself out and pretend I am ashamed of using that pun for the billionth time.
Monkey Man (dir. Dev Patel)
A young man sets out on a quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who killed his mother as they abuse the power they wield over the poor. Dev Patel’s first feature did not have to snap so hard. However, I am happy it did because it is one of the best movies I have seen this year. Monkey Man wears its influences from Bollywood and Korean thrillers on its sleeve as we watch Patel’s character kick so much ass that we have no choice but to stan. If you want to see some vicious violence, brutal fight sequences, and the hero we have been waiting for, then Monkey Man is your man. I am happy it is hitting Prime Video because these kills are a sight to behold, and more people deserve to see them for themselves.
The Thing (dir. John Carpenter)
A research team is trapped in the Antarctic with a shape-shifting alien that takes on the appearance of its victims. This 1982 gem is what Halloween is really about. The Thing is the kind of claustrophobic chiller they do not make anymore. It is tied for my favorite John Carpenter movie with his other masterpiece Halloween (1978). Not only are the practical effects a thing of beauty, but the paranoia-soaked tale also stars Kurt Russell, Keith David, and T. K. Carter. Every time I revisit this classic, I change my mind about the ending. However, I also love it that much more every viewing because whatever we think does not matter, seeing how MacReady and Childs are still meeting a cold ending either way. If this film is a necessary part of your scary movie marathon plans, Prime Video has you covered.
