‘Hatching’ Interview: Animatronics Guru Gustav Hoegen Talks Making Monsters [Watch]
Hanna Bergholm’s debut feature film Hatching features a terrifying bird-like creature that is constantly changing form. As it grows and evolves, it begins to appear more like a human. But she’s still terrifying. When making the film, Bergholm knew she wanted to use practical effects for her monster. So she contacted Gustav Hoegen.
Hoegen is one of the best working in the business of animatronics. His work has appeared in Star Wars, Prometheus, and Jurassic World. He started and owns Biomimic Studios, a studio dedicated to creating top-notch creature effects.
In honor of Hatching‘s release, we spoke with Hoegen about his childhood dream of working with animatronics, creating the film’s puppet, and more.
